With so many choices how can you be sure to pick the right window and features for your home? Let’s start with the basic window styles.

Double Hung is made up of 2 window sashes that slide up and down to open. This is the typical window. These can be very difficult to clean unless they are designed so that the top and or bottom sashes tilt in for easy cleaning.
Sliders are like the double hung except they slide side to side to open. One side maybe fixed in place. These are just like a sliding glass door but smaller.
Casement windows are hinged on one side and open with a crank or slider bar. Quality operating hardware is a must for long life.
Awning windows are like casements turned on its side.
Bay windows are large units that have one center picture window and angled side windows that bump it out from the wall.
Bow windows are similar to bay windows but are designed to form more of an arc than the angles that a bay does.
Garden windows are like a mini greenhouse. They bump out from the house with glass on the sides and front as well as a sloped glass top.

Grilles/Muntins are used to give the look of a divided window. They can be on one or both sashes. They can either be fitted to the outside of the glass and snapped or glued in place or they can go in between the glass for easy glass cleaning

Window finishes come in many styles and materials. Maintenance free has be come the buzzword for people today. The classic wood window that required sanding and painting and that could warp or swell over time is being replaced with materials that give the look and beauty of wood but could be vinyl, aluminum or even a composite material. Composites and vinyl windows are the main choice for maintenance free products that don’t warp, rot or ever need painting.

Glazing refers to the glass part of your window. Most windows today are double glazed (or double paned) windows. Basically it is 2 sheets of glass with a space between that acts as an insulating barrier. That space can be filled with an inert gas such as Argon or have a Low-E coating that will increase the energy efficiency and can reduce harmful ultraviolet rays. Less common due to weight is the triple glazed. The glass can also be Safety glass or Tempered Glass depending on certain applications.
